Job Summary

The Chief of Police plans, directs, manages and oversees the activities and operations of the village Police Department. This includes but is not limited to; law enforcement, crime prevention, crime suppression and administer policies and procedures; interact and coordinate activities with other departments and outside agencies; and provide respected supervision, leadership and guidance to all employees of the Police Department.

Mandatory Minimum Requirements

  • A U.S. Citizen or a Naturalized U.S. Citizen
  • Minimum of 21 years of age
  • A valid Ohio Peace Officer Certification by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission
  • LEADS Practitioner Certification
  • A valid Ohio driver’s license in good standing without record of suspension or revocation in any state and complies with the Village of Greenwich driving policy
  • Successfully pass a full criminal background check and motor vehicle background check
  • Successfully pass a drug screening test
  • No serious misdemeanors or felony convictions or admissions
  • Have the ability to use proficiently a computer as well as Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Power Point and Microsoft Outlook E-Mail
  • 24-hour availability and the ability to respond to police related incidents within one (1) hour

Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a college or university with an associate’s degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice or closely related field
  • 10 years of police experience, of which three (3) must have been in supervisory experience

Basic Day to Day Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following list of duties and responsibilities are representative of the position of Police Chief and is for example only of the job duties that may be encountered on a day to day basis. This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all inclusive and will constantly change as the job requires. This list only represents a small portion of the required job duties and is provided for example only. It shall be the Police Chief’s responsibility to constantly adapt as necessary to perform the day to day duties of a Police Chief.

  • Be physically fit enough to perform the required job duties of a police officer and the Chief of Police
  • Be able to communicate professionally and effectively with the citizens of the village as well as the mayor and village council
  • Have a knowledge of the English language. Understand the structure and content of the English language including the meaning of words and grammar
  • Ability to hire police department personnel as necessary
  • Ability to train and supervise all police department personnel
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and orally
  • Ability to maintain a productive and effective police department
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized police department
  • Manage all police policies and operations to ensure the protection of village resident’s life and property
  • Establish police department policies and procedures as necessary for the day to day operation of the village police department
  • Ensure that the laws of the Village of Greenwich and the State of Ohio are enforced to maintain public peace and safety
  • Cooperate with federal, state, local and county law enforcement agencies as necessary
  • Attend training seminars, conferences and meetings as necessary to maintain the necessary administrative skills for the position of Police Chief
  • Plan the schedules and direct the day to day operations of the police department to maintain the expected professional standards
  • Maintain accurate, complete and organized records of all personnel in the police department
  • Maintain accurate, complete and organized information for all reports and cases the police department is involved with


  • Assist the village Fiscal Officer with putting together the annual budget for the police department
  • Ensure that all officers in the department complete the required annual firearms training
  • Ensure that all officers in the department complete any required annual training that is required
  • Assure that all the rules and regulations of the Village of Greenwich Police Department are uniformly followed and administer discipline consistently and uniformly as required
  • Respond to and resolve citizen complaints involving police department personnel
  • Attend village council meetings on a regular basis and provide an accurate daily report on police department activities
  • Interpret and enforce the Ordinances of the Village of Greenwich and the Ohio Revised Code
  • Assist officers as necessary
  • Maintain accurate and organized personnel files
  • Evaluate the performance of all employees of the police department yearly as set forth by the village council
  • Maintain confidentiality of information as necessary and required
  • Recognize areas that the police department personnel need training and take the necessary steps to ensure that the training is provided
  • Be able to successfully operate all electronic devices required by the department
  • Be able to analyze situations quickly and objectively be able to determine the necessary course of action
  • Have the ability and knowledge to solve crimes within the Village of Greenwich
